& Augmented Reality Island in Second Life

Note: from business card in SL obtained 01.04.09 by Edwige

Welcome to the Augmented Reality Research Lab in Second Life.

This area is a virtual output of the AR/SL group in the GVU Center at Georgia Tech. This group, led by Blair MacIntyre (Associate Professor, School of Interactive Computing), Jay Bolter (Professor, School of Literature, Communication and Culture) and Michael Nitsche (Assistant Professor, School of Literature, Communication and Culture), is exploring the potential of Second Life (and other MMO platforms) as a platform for augmented and mixed reality entertainment, education and art.

Blair MacIntyre’s Augmented Environments Lab is currently building the AR viewer for SL, which will be used by the group to conduct our research. The principle architect of the view is Tobias Lang.

If you would like to know more, please contact Blair MacIntyre (blair@cc.gatech.edu), Jay Bolter (jay.bolter@lcc.gatech.edu) or Michael Nitsche (michael.nitsche@lcc.gatech.edu).

immersed reality vs augmented reality vs mixed reality vs virtual reality, originally uploaded by meganleigh.

I wonder what happened on Jan 16th to have such a peak in tumblr blog posts on ‘mixed-reality’. By the way I did this graph twice, the first time typing ‘mixed reality’, both graphs displayed the same info. ‘Immersed reality’ does not seem to be used as often.

virtual vs augmented vs immersed tumblr graph

Originally uploaded by meganleigh

I originally picked up a part of this graph from Angrybeth Shortbread’s tweet, on 23 January 2009 re: tumblr trends. I added the immersed reality trend to see what the frequency of this term is being used compared to virtual and augmented in recent blogs. I should add ‘mixed reality’ to see what happens.

Camille SCHERRER Augmented Reality ‘Magic Book’

Friday, January 16th, 2009

I’ve been looking at Augmented Reality Research over the last six months trying to figure out how I could apply it to my work. I am working with it a little with the outcome goals for Our City, Our Music, but my PhD goal is to make it through creative practice demonstrating Mixed Reality. After seeing this video by Camille SCHERRER the light is starting to come on. It’s been one of those concepts that I know applies to my practice of visually mixing spaces but just beyond my understanding of how to incorporate all the fields of vision. I am now thinking that the footage I took in Toronto and New York and even the space in Leeds, at H-building could be blended with the Second Life images and then add the Augmented Reality. This is finally what feels right. How do I get all this together? And can I make this happen live? I’m going to start by asking if CVLAB can give me a hand. Are static images required as they seem to be masking human movement here.
