Street Karaoke! – Proposal for Artists Taking the Lead – Cultural Olympiad

Here is an excerpt from my proposal for the Artists Taking the Lead project; a commissioning programme by the Arts Council for the 2012 Olympics.Street Karaoke! This is a geo-located karaoke game where famous songs are placed in symbolic spaces around the country for people to belt out at their leisure. Technically Street Karaoke! would operate on a GPS enabled mobile phone or a device such as a car SatNav. When people walk into designated ‘hot spots’ a video loads on their device with a visual and audio cue to begin singing. The lyrics unfold across the screen with a change of colour as the song progresses to keep the singer synchronized. It’s a simple idea packed full of fun potential. T—Mobile’s recent Trafalgar Square karaoke stunt, part of their ‘Life’s for Sharing’ campaign is a great indication of how approximately 13,000 people love to get up and sing. I think it would be fantastic to geo-locate that moment so people can go back and partake in it again and again. This project will be accessible to the growing number of mobile phones that are GPS and video aware. It can be experienced as a family event, a school activity, a team event, a tourist trap, an office challenge, a seniors showcase or a late night fiasco. Can you imagine a Kaiser Chief’s song sung on the streets of Leeds where the residents are already so proud of their talent or ‘Penny Lane’ in Liverpool animated in such an accessible way. While I have selected the Yorkshire region in this project I feel that it could just be the starting point for a national activity, one that responds to popular karaoke songs while reflecting the awesome cultural map of the UK. The experience should be for everyone.

THIRTEEN WAYS OF LOOKING AT APOLLO
By: Matthew Battles | Categories: Codebreaking

 -last paragraph-

“Once we sent humans into space to give a focus to our imagination; we needed heroes to embody our passions and our frailties. It’s by virtue of machines, however, that we have reached beyond the moon. Machines can compute but cannot feel; they express our intentions but cannot share our passions. Such has been the understanding, and the dilemma, of modern times. But perhaps we’ve underestimated the machine — which is only another way of saying that we’ve underestimated ourselves. Dimly, we’ve begun to realize that as we extend ourselves with tools, we inhabit them with our dreams and desires as well. Perhaps as we probe the reaches of interstellar space, we’ll feel more keenly the extension of our senses by even such abstract and remote tools as these. We’re coming to the point where machines may become not only tools and extensions of our senses, but our heroes, too.”

Famo class on Current TV

This class on becoming famous on the internet bases the entire grading results on an algorythm. There is also a write up about it in the TIMES here. Great idea, creative and funny too!The video above includes footage from the Ours:Democracy in the Age of Branding exhibition which included my filmThe Ottawa River. I don’t know where the issue lies but I still think it was a shame that the selected artists for Rebranding Acts were not credited on the exhibition ‘Participants’ page. We were lumped under the term ‘Wooloo Productions’ in the ‘Online’ section of the show. Reflecting on the point of the above course I think it could have helped our Online Identity/Online Fame/Digital Identity if we had been individually credited within the page ‘Complete List of Participants’, or maybe just listed on the Wooloo Productions page here. In fact now that I re-read the The Wooloo Production page it does not mention that the selection was juried… you have to further click on to figure this out.So in the spirit of bringing attention to the Rebranding Act Artists + Wooloo + Our:Democracy in the Age of Branding I’m combining their names and a link to their work in this post. Does this bump up the ‘famo score’ in the Famotron?I’ve checked the other credited ‘Online’ participants and they seem to feature on the ‘Complete Participants’ page, but if you weren’t and I have missed you let me know and I will happily add you to the list below.Megan Smithhttp://www.megansmith.cahttp://www.wooloo.org/MeganSmith/CORPUS COLLECTIVE – Ektoras Binikos, William Brovelli, Michał Brzeziński and Avi Rosenhttp://www.wooloo.org/corpuscollective/Nada Prljahttp://www.wooloo.org/political/http://www.seriousinterests.co.uk/Enrico Centonzehttp://www.wooloo.org/enricocentonze/http://www.enrico111.com/Nick Tobier ( Who also did The Sandwich Box Project for Wooloo New Life Berlin Festival)http://www.wooloo.org/everydayplaces/http://www.everydayplaces.com/Dmitry Strakoskyhttp://www.wooloo.org/dima/http://www.shiftingplanes.org/Ruth Oppenheimhttp://www.wooloo.org/rutopp/http://www.rutopp.net/Elisabeth Smolarzhttp://www.wooloo.org/elisabethsmolarz/http://smolarz.com/Larissa Sansourhttp://www.wooloo.org/lsansour/http://www.kunstdk.dk/kunstner/larissa_sansourNo Fixed Abode – HORATIO EASTWOOD AND TERRY SLATERhttp://www.wooloo.org/nofixedabode/http://www.nofixedabode.org.uk/

Proposed abstract for DAC09

Abstract submitted for themes:- Embodiment and performativity- A Space-Time of Ubiquity and EmbeddednessClaiming the Portable Home: Creative Acts of Identity Placemaking within the Digital Domain. This paper will discuss creative extension of the self into the digital domain as a technology mediated experience and the folding over of what is said ‘virtual’ into the situation of mixed reality. The contemporary digital experience allows a person to operate within multiple locations, cultures and spaces simultaneously through the technologies of mobile internet, mashups of social network applications and virtual world participation among others. Socially extending within these networked spaces enables a place(s) for creative profile generation. The act of labelling or branding ‘what is mine’ has not radically altered from the activity of decorating a notebook with tic-tac-toe, names of favourite rock stars and stickers. These intentional acts that identify the owner with the object through an expression of interest are trademarks within digital spaces like MySpace and facebook where glittering animated GIFs, automated music players and embedded quizzes adorn profile pages. What is different though is that this broadcasting of deliberate identity branding is no longer tied to a social network which exists within the geographical parameters predetermined by a persons day to day meanderings. The situation of the digital domain allows for social placemaking across a vast geographical space to a maintained network and with an extending phantom limb into spaces unknown to the profile holder.I will identify artists who are demonstration the breadth of technology mediated experiences and documenting the current shift into a digital social network embedded culture. This paper will chronicle critical mash-ups of MySpace rendered animated gif’s by artist Olia Lialina to Marisa Olson’s Assisted Living, a ‘Martha Stewartesque’ performative parody to the tune of technology dependant living in old age. Artist Annabeth Robinson also known as Angrybeth Shortbread, a name adopted for her Second Life avatar, is the creator of Avatar DNA which generates a user defined visualization from the Key (UUID) demonstrating that each identity is in fact unique marking a place within the technology mediated social net. I will also discuss my own performances as Edwige Pronovost, my avatar who manifests herself in the physical and travels the ‘real world’ in search for the spaces she visits in Second Life. Our journeys have taken us from Leeds, UK to Toronto’s CN Tower, to New York’s MoMA, to a mini-gulf course in Cocoa Beach Florida. It is a Mixed Reality that is resulting from embeddedness, where the combined effect of ‘the real’ and ‘the virtual’ are in one space enabling a merged physical and digital experience where the situation of the digital domain is emotionally felt and embodied.I recommend following these links for visual references to the mentioned art works.Olia Lialina:http://hypertemps.procurate.com/index.php?id=P45Marisa Olson:http://www.wooloo.org/assisted/Annabeth Robinson:http://www.annamorphic.co.uk/dna.htmlMegan Smith & Edwige Pronovost (avatar):http://megansmith.ca/blog/?paged=5Digital Arts and Culture ConferenceUniversity of California Irvinehttp://dac09.uci.edu/index.html

Second Life as a Platform for Augmented Reality

Welcome to the Augmented Reality Research Lab in Second Life. This area is a virtual output of the AR/SL group in the GVU Center at Georgia Tech. This group, led by Blair MacIntyre (Associate Professor, School of Interactive Computing), Jay Bolter (Professor, School of Literature, Communication and Culture) and Michael Nitsche (Assistant Professor, School of Literature, Communication and Culture), is exploring the potential of Second Life (and other MMO platforms) as a platform for augmented and mixed reality entertainment, education and art.Blair MacIntyre’s Augmented Environments Lab is currently building the AR viewer for SL, which will be used by the group to conduct our research. The principle architect of the view is Tobias Lang.If you would like to know more, please contact Blair MacIntyre (blair@cc.gatech.edu), Jay Bolter (jay.bolter@lcc.gatech.edu) or Michael Nitsche (michael.nitsche@lcc.gatech.edu).

‘Citizen Journalism changing the face of old and new media’BBC report

The above quote comes from this report on the BBC on January 16th referencing Janis Krums tweet which travelled around the world before the media could get a chopper out to cover the story. It’s this kind of instant access and transfer of knowledge which is revolutionizing the way we receive data and it is altering our behaviour within our social networks. Is the microblog significant? 140 characters did the trick in this instance to swell the hearts of millions around the world. Do we need 24 hour CNN overlayed with twitter streams, overlayed with our geo-located journey, overlayed with our portfolio stocks refreshing, our friendfeeds, our streaming music? Are we moving towards visual parameters like a WWC screen. How come, in a world of 24 hour CNN I missed how dangerous life is in Sri Lanka? I have in the back of my brain the knowledge that there is unrest there but actually it seems to be running much deeper.Have I been obtuse to what is happening in the world or am I just not receiving the right information? Can these microblogs filter into countries in China? Can the tweets from these places reach us? The DoGoSee.com Project at one time could not be seen in China, can it now? And why was it blacklisted? Is Burma still imposing limited access to the internet, ie. limited to the government officials? The digital domain allows us to reach out, extend our identities and to retains contact as well as to participate in contributing to the intense data flow, but how do we keep up? How do I access what I need to know, to make sure that I know what is going on everywhere? Is the Twitter ‘citizen journalism/lifelogging contributing verbal diarrhea to the ether?RSS??!!!Are journalists frustrated with the term ‘Citizen Journalism’? The concept of what journalism is, is changing radically because lifelogging is becoming mainstream. Thanks NOKIA, SONY, APPLE,… you have made a product that is replacing the cigarette, and it has changed our depth of view. You had me at hello.

Quasimondo Twitter VFD Display – Interactive twitter recipe

Twitter VFD Display

One is a visual text output onto an LCD screen which displays the most recent twitter. The other, is to make a collection of memorable statements onto LED grids. (Apologies if the lingo is not accurate, I’m trying to get my head around all of this and just using this blog to articulate and record my thoughts.) The first one I would make would be “u twit!”, and then maybe “Where’s that pot at the end of the rainbow?”.Now that I have this entry I will try update this entry with more of these statements. I have also considered making them in neon… but the whole thing boils down to the fact that I don’t have a sugar daddy to pay for all my imaginative adventures.Ok, so actually Quasimondo has linked an arduino to VFD cashier display which relays twitter updates. To further build on idea 1 I’ve been trying to see if I could link a webcam to take constant pictures that relay to twitter. I have this in mind to propose to New Media Scotland’s Twitterer in Residence Programme, and also for the installation/space/performance planned for the near future, where a camera could be a fly on the wall which visually updates my activity within my 3D browser installation. Also, worth noting here I wish I had had a Kickbeeby Corey Menscher, while I was making Child. This would have added one more dimension to the piece. And, tying to previous post on sensecam, it would be perfect if all that data could relay to twitter too. I would love to be the guinea pig if someone could do all the building… but may have to try to put it together myself.[update 14:35] Lady Ada has a tutorial on her site for linking an arduino to LCD, then there is talk of linking to twitter in her Botanicalls Twitter Kit. Does Ben have any of these spare parts up in Headingley, must ask?

I’ve been looking at Augmented Reality Research over the last six months trying to figure out how I could apply it to my work. I am working with it a little with the outcome goals for Our City, Our Music, but my PhD goal is to make it through creative practice demonstrating Mixed Reality. After seeing this video by Camille SCHERRER the light is starting to come on. It’s been one of those concepts that I know applies to my practice of visually mixing spaces but just beyond my understanding of how to incorporate all the fields of vision. I am now thinking that the footage I took in Toronto and New York and even the space in Leeds, at H-building could be blended with the Second Life images and then add the Augmented Reality. This is finally what feels right. How do I get all this together? And can I make this happen live? I’m going to start by asking if CVLAB can give me a hand. Are static images required as they seem to be masking human movement here.

I have been using Insta Mapper on my iPhone to trace my geo movements in order to match multiple data, like Edwige Pronovost performances and engagement with research projects. In Belfast I was at the mscape conference presenting Our City, Our Music. In New York Edwige performed in Time Square and outside the MOMA, starting her performance at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center atParsons The New School for Design. I had some work showing in the OURS:Democracy in the Age of Branding exhibition, photo below.

Second Life Meets Real Life by LauraMW12345

LauraMW12345:

I made this for my Virtual Enviornments class. I wanted avatars from Second Life to exist in Real Life. I did this by first building a green screen in Second Life and shooting avatars in front of it. I used After Effects & Final Cut Pro to key out the green. In certain instances I used key framing to achieve the desired effect. All the Real-Life footage is shot in Toronto.
